Correcting the Color in an Image – Photoshop Tutorial

In this tutorial, you are going to learn how to easily and quickly correct the color of a photo. Maybe you have a photo that you want to display, but the color is way off. Today you are going to correct the color in that image with Photoshop.

Before we begin, I just want to say that you do need some basic Photoshop skills to perform this tutorial. I am going to be walking you through this step by step, but it is always to be familiar with Photoshop before you begin.

Okay, let’s begin correcting the color in an image using Photoshop.

Step One. The first thing that you are going to do is to open your photo in Photoshop. This is done very easily by going to the File menu and choosing open. This will open your photo as a new layer, and it is ready to start editing.

Step Two. The next thing that you need to do is to set some reference points so that you know exactly what your white and black points are. To do this, first, you need to make a new adjustment layer and make a new Threshold adjustment layer. This can be found at the bottom of your layers palette and looks like a half and half circle. In the Threshold dialog box, take the slider and move it all the way to the left so that the image is completely white. Now start tapping the up arrow on your keyboard until you start to see some parts of the image reappear on the white surface. The portions that are showing up are the darkest parts of the image, so that is where you need to set the black point. To do this just hold down Shift and click on the area that you can see in the white area. Now move the slider all the way to the right so that the image is completely black, and tap the down arrow key until you start to see parts of the image come back. This will be your white point, so you need to hold down Shift again and click on one of the light areas that you can see. Now you can click Cancel on the Threshold dialog box.

Step Three. Now we need to find a Neutral Gray set point for your image. To do this, first, make a new layer on top of your image. Now go to the Edit Menu, and down to Fill. In the Fill window, make sure it is set to 50% Gray, and click OK. Now you need to change the blend mode of that layer to Difference. That can be found at the top of your layers palette. You can see that your picture looks really weird now. Don’t worry, we are going to fix it.

Step Four. Now go to the Adjustment Layer icon, and choose Threshold again. Now move the slider all of the way to the left, and tap on the up arrow on your keyboard until you start to see areas show up. The areas that are first to come back are the neutral gray point. To choose this, hold down Shift, and click on one of the areas that you can see. Now click Cancel on the Threshold window, and delete the top layer.

Step Five. Now go back to the Layer Adjustments icon, and choose Curves. In the curves window, click on the black eyedropper (far left of the three), turn on your Caps Lock key, and hover over the image align the crosshairs. When the crosshairs are over each other just click to set the black point. You can do the same with the Gray dropper and the White dropper. Now you can click OK on the Curves window once all points are set.

As you can see, your image is now color corrected and ready to display wherever you want.
